If you have a grown child living in a house, should they pay rent? Because I think a lot of parents are asking the wrong question. The question you should be asking is: are you helping them build their independence or are you helping them avoid it? So just paying rent isn't good enough. Because they can give you a couple hundred dollars and still be avoiding learning how to be independent. I seen a video of a kid who was still living at home, but his parents were helping him save money so he could buy his own house.
SPEAKER_00So if I stack this, I could put a down payment together? That's the plan. We didn't have anybody to show us this. You do.
SPEAKER_01They're helping him build independence. A lot of parents just make their kids give them rent and that's it. But you're not teaching them how to be independent. When you leave your parents' home, you're gonna have to pay rent somewhere. You're gonna have to pay bills. Are you teaching them how to build their independence? Are you teaching them, yo, look, you need to save up so you can get your own place if they want their own house? Are you helping them do that? Or are you just helping them avoid it by just giving you some money and you're taking care of everything like they're 12 or 13 years old? Or even younger. That's the question that you need to ask yourself. Are you helping this grown adult that's paying rent that's living with you? Are you helping them build their independence? So, this is the question you need to ask yourself. Is it free? You're not charging them anything, are you charging them rent? Or are you telling them it's time for you to move out? Or, better yet, are you letting them stay there and helping them learn how to, by paying rent or saving money, build their independence? Which one are you?
